Artist biography

Tony Phillips, known professionally as The Manbroiderer, is a Midlands‑based textile artist whose work centres on expressive, sculptural embroidery. Through dense, tactile stitch—particularly his signature use of French knots, bullion knots, and layered thread structures—he creates richly textured surfaces that explore gesture, intuition, and the physicality of making. His practice is rooted in process: slow, accumulative mark‑making that transforms cloth into hybrid micro‑worlds of colour, movement, and emotional resonance.

Tony’s work often draws on natural textures and organic forms, reflecting his ongoing interest in nature‑rooted inspiration and the landscapes surrounding the West Midlands. His recent series, including Faultline and evolving mixed‑media microcosm studies, investigates how thread can behave like drawing, carving, or sediment, building sculptural depth through repetition and disruption.

Alongside his studio practice, Tony is an educator, curriculum designer, and founder of The Manbroiderer—a dedicated learning space offering inclusive, judgement‑free embroidery workshops. His teaching emphasises accessibility, confidence building, and expressive textile exploration for adults at all levels.

Tony is also an Aurifil Thread Brand Ambassador and a participant in regional textile initiatives, including Worcestershire Open Studios at IDC College, Bromsgrove as well as a member of Midlands Textile Forum and Traverse Textile Art Group. His work continues to expand through layered experimentation, mixed media, and contemporary embroidery techniques.

Faultline in Red

Faultline (Red) maps a quiet turbulence beneath an apparently ordered surface. The upper hemisphere holds a fractured grid—lines that waver, buckle, and drift out of alignment—suggesting a structure under pressure. Below, the composition dissolves into swirling pools, clustered knots, and flowing currents that feel organic, almost tidal. The contrast between these two zones creates a sense of slow, internal movement: a shift happening beneath the surface, subtle but inevitable.

The red palette sharpens the tension between geometry and fluidity. It invites the viewer to move closer, tracing the transitions where controlled pattern gives way to instinctive, accumulative mark‑making. This piece continues Tony Phillips’ exploration of embroidered micro‑worlds, where stitch becomes gesture, sediment, and emotional residue. Faultline (Red) sits within an ongoing investigation of disruption and repair—how a surface records pressure, adapts, and begins to transform.
