Artist biography
Rita Omuwa Omozuafoh is a Nigerian multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Their practice explores the surreal dimensions of inhabiting a Black body, navigating migration, and unpacking identity as a route to self-understanding. Drawing on African spiritual motifs and traditional tarot iconography, Omuwa fuses symbolism with portraiture to create layered visual narratives. Their work includes the book layout and architecture for Ani Kayode's debut novel, And Then He Sang A Lullaby (2023), and portrait photography featured in PhotoVogue. Their work will also appear in the upcoming issue of Wreath 6 (2026).

I had dinner with friends recently; nothing unusual, but there was this feeling like we were all quietly avoiding certain conversations. Three of us are immigrants, three of us are Black, three of us are wxmen. There's a lot we could talk about, but sometimes we just don't, so we can stay in a good mood.
In this piece, I'm the one watching. I can see what's underneath it all and part of me wants to bring it up, but honestly I just want to be happy for a bit. I don't want to talk about how unsure I feel about my place here, or how othered I feel at work, or how bad things are financially. But it's always there, even when we're not saying it.
So I eat my food, stare ahead, laugh with everyone. And every so often we get distracted and face the problem
