Artist biography
Maggie Leaver is a Birmingham-based artist exploring contemporary approaches to painting through watercolour, mixed media and oils. Using expressive and experimental processes, her work responds to the natural world and lived experience.
Maggie has developed her practice over the last 16 years.A career in art was unfortunately not an option when she was young so she is very happy finally to pursue a career as an artist after working many years in the NHS and charities. Practice continues to evolve through self – directed studio practice and recent work with EXP experimental art group, commissions, exhibiting, and ongoing formal and informal learning.
She is a member and Membership Co-ordinator for Birmingham Art Circle, and member of United Artists of South Birmingham, EXP Collective and Birmingham Urban Sketchers’. Maggie also works with two local galleries.
Other loves are dogs and music. She enjoys living with and supporting her beloved rescue dogs and loves jazz and music in many forms.

With this work I invite the viewer into an amazing world— somewhere familiar yet elusive, where observation, memory and fantasy overlap. The title reflects this sense of entering a landscape that might belong to a fairytale, while remaining rooted in the vitality and beauty of the natural world. Another Fairytale explores the natural world as a place of fascination, transformation and possibility. Organic forms emerge and dissolve within a richly layered surface, where recognisable fragments of hedgerows, leaves and vegetation become increasingly abstract.
Built through watercolour, mixed media and expressive mark-making, I combine translucent washes with textured, tactile passages. Lines move through the composition suggesting stems and undergrowth, while scattered circular forms suggest flowers, light or glimpses into a magical world.
