Artist Biography
Emma is an award-winning feltmaker working from her studio in South Birmingham. She established her company Silversoles in 2000, creating functional felted textiles for interiors and to wear. Her work has been exhibited in contemporary craft galleries across the UK and US including The British Museum and Yale Centre for British Arts.
Working experimentally with the ancient craft of feltmaking, she creates tactile pieces that evoke warmth and comfort, invite touch, and challenge conventional perceptions of felt. Recently her work has moved into making wall pieces exploring wool’s intrinsic qualities, its history and provenance to highlight and celebrate the beauty of the fibre.
Emma studied at Newcastle Art College and the University of East Anglia, graduating in 1992, and went on to complete an MA in Surface Design & Textiles at Birmingham City University with Distinction in 2019.

Inspired by the concept of true fibre circularity-where renewable raw materials support carbon sequestration and biodiversity- Chromatic Grey 1 celebrates the rich textures and natural tonal range of Gotland wool. The work is constructed using raw, unwashed, and undyed locks sourced directly from shepherdess Pauline Caroline Jones’ pedigree Bride Valley Flock, ensuring complete traceability and animal welfare transparency. Each lock is meticulously graded by colour and individually arranged in chromatic sequence onto a blended grey wool background before being hand-felted together and washed. Through this material process, the design focuses the viewer's eye on the quiet complexity of the natural palette. Simultaneously, it prompts a deeper consideration of wool as a vital, renewable resource and its capacity to play a meaningful part in contemporary environmental conversations and climate action.
